A technical standard is “a document that provides requirements, specifications, guidelines or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose" (definition from ISO, one organization that produces standards).
When standards are mentioned, an identified is included that includes the organization and a number or some combination of letters and numbers. Examples include ISO 9001 and IEEE 802.11. This is the easier way for you to locate the standard or to ask for the library to help get you a copy of the standard.
Many standards are not available freely, but the library can help you get a copy.
