Data Management

Since MLA does not have specific citation style for data, cite datasets using the general rules for a web document.

Datasets are cited similarly to articles. Use the Purdue Owl site to find the format and an example.

Some notes about citing data:

• Use a "retrieved on" date only if the data set is changed
• If the data is published, use that for year of publication
• If the data is unpublished, use the year(s) of collection
• Include the version number in parentheses after the title, if there is one

At minimum, a dataset citation in Chicago style should include the database or site name, a description phrase or record locater, the access date, and a URL or DOI.
