Alternative metrics, often referred to as altmetrics, include additional metric sources such as online reader attention and engagement. Altmetrics tend to be more current than traditional metrics, so they can more quickly show the importance of a given publication.
Examples of altmetrics include downloads, social media attention, traditional media attention, exports to citation management systems, university reading requirements, and bookmarks on citation management tools.
