The Fellowes Quasar e 500 comb binding machine

We have a Fellowes Quasar e 500 comb binding machine. This machine can be used to bind paper and other thin materials like plastic sheets into a booklet. Each binding is 19 rings, and we have them in 3/8", 1", and 2" sizes.

Using the Comb Binder

The storage and scrap material trays

To begin using the comb binder, first plug the device in and flip the power switch on. Open the lid on the device to expose the metal teeth, and check that the power LED is lit. If this is all correct, you are ready to begin the binding process. On the right underside of the machine, there are two trays. The tray in the front of the machine is used for storage of comb bindings as well as for measuring the size of the binding if you are unsure of the size you are using.

The next step is punching holes into your paper. Slide your paper into the slot marked with the dashed line, and make sure that the paper is aligned with the left side of the slot. If your paper is too large, the wheel on the left side of the paper slot can be turned to adjust the size of the slot. The machine can cut 20 sheets of paper at a time, or 3 sheets of plastic at a time. If you have more than that amount, you must do two separate punches. One the paper is aligned in the slot, press the green button on the right side of the slot, and the machine will punch out your holes for the binding. After your paper is punched remove it from the machine.

The next step is to load your binding into the machine. Align the binding with the long metal teeth on the machine, and slide it into place with the solid plastic strip facing the back of the machine. Make sure that the rings of the binding are protruding forward from the teeth. Next, make sure that the lever on the left side of the machine is pushed all the way backwards. Once the binding is loaded, pull the lever forward until the binding is opened to the desired level. If the binding doesn't open, you may have to flip it over and insert it the opposite way.

The final step is to load the paper onto the binding. Order the paper in the order you'd like it to be bound, then align the holes onto the exposed teeth of the comb binding. Once your paper is loaded onto the binding in the desired order, push the level backwards to close the binding. Slide your bound paper upwards from the teeth, and your binding job is complete!
